Cheuk Wong

Cheuk is currently a second year PhD student at Asian Studies, the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, the University of Edinburgh. She is also the managing editor of Renditions, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Cheuk graduated from the University of Leeds with a master’s degree in Conference Interpreting and Translation Studies. She soon joined Renditions, a leading journal of Chinese literature in English translation, as an editor. Her work brought her in close contact with Chinese literature of different eras, and she became increasingly intrigued with the formation process of the Chinese literary canon. In September 2015, she started her research at the University of Edinburgh with the hopes of achieving a better understanding of canon formation in a Chinese context.

Research

Cheuk’s research will focus on the canon formation process of Sanguo zhi yanyi 三國志演義 [The Romance of the Three Kingdoms] in the past five centuries, aiming to analyse scholarly discourses surrounding the novel to try and answer how, when, and why the work achieved its status today as pedagogical canon and canon of traditional Chinese fiction, and to determine whether Sanguo’s current canonical status is the result of conscious canon building attempts.
